Nose Review - Rating: 87
The nose of Barrell Bourbon New Year 2023 is silky smooth and intricately woven with sweet spice. It is a delicate and mellow nosing experience with an almost fruity underlayer. The aroma is very, very inviting. Don’t look for a nose that will overpower you; look for one that draws you in with its indulgent spice and charming nuances. All of the notes, including toasted char, are equally represented. I love how the caramel sweetness waits for the baking spices (nutmeg, cardamom, and peppercorn) to subside, then takes over the party, if only for a while. This is one of those nosing experiences where, if you are patient, you can distinguish many intricate notes. It is a living experience. Frankly, I wish I had a better nose to describe this experience appropriately.
Palate Review - Rating: 83
The palate. Oh wow, this is nice. You feel the proof and the baking spices immediately. However, there is a resinous sweetness that will not be denied. As with all Barrell products, an oiliness to the mouth feel enhances the tasting experience. Make no mistake; the baking spices or nutmeg, cardamom, and a little turmeric combine to reign supreme in this tasting. A modest amount of caramel and sugary sweetness keeps this bourbon honest. This is a true winter bourbon.

On the backend, the finish, the baking spices take over Barrell Bourbon New Year 2023. It has an incredibly long and glorious finish that will keep you warm all winter.

While there may be many bourbons with a similar profile, few are done as well as this bourbon. This wonderful blend is from a selection of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10-year-old straight bourbon whiskeys distilled in TN, IN, KY, OH, WY, NY, TX & MD.

I always appreciate an appropriately priced whiskey in today's market, and Barrell Bourbon New Year 2023 is one. Barrell's $79.99 price point is a good value. But please don't tell them.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
