I have never heard of Wollersheim Distillery Wisconsin Straight Bourbon, so I was curious about what to expect with this review. My expectations of this 5-year-old single-cask series straight bourbon from Wollersheim Distillery in Wisconsin were exceeded. Let's get to the review.

Detailed Tasting Notes
Nose Review - Rating: 84
The initial nosing of Lost Lantern Wollersheim Distillery Wisconsin Straight Bourbon built anticipation for what I hoped would follow. A wonderful, but not overwhelming, crème brûlée and burnt brown sugar aroma invited you in. In the middle of this treat is cherry whipped cream. But the smell is not completely sweet as some fabulous baking spices balanced things out. After the first sip, some baking spices come to the fore. Fantastic, I keep returning to the nose because it is a delight.
Palate Review - Rating: 85
The heat of the palate hits like a Mack truck, as all 131.2 proof points are evident. But make no mistake about it; the flavor also punches you in the face. Burnt brown sugar and char rounded out by honey cream gelato. The sweetness, spice, and heat ratio is flawless, with the sweetness tapering off after the mid-palate and giving away to cardamom and black pepper spice. This is an exciting pour. Warm, creamy, flavorful, and hot, but not so hot that it keeps you from enjoying it. The tasting moves toward the notes in the finish as you get deeper into the tasting.
Finish Review - Rating: 84
On the initial sip, you feel the finish down to your core. The finish features mild barrel char, leather, and fresh-cut tobacco leaves layered with spicy black pepper. There is only a trace of honey sweetness on the finish. A beautiful palate and finish contrast!
Uniqueness Review - Rating: 85
I rarely find a 5-year-old cask-strength bourbon with this kind of tasting experience. That makes this relatively unique.
Value Review - Rating: 82
Typically a 5-year-old cask-strength bourbon at $89.99 is problematic. That's not the case with Lost Lantern Wollersheim Distillery Wisconsin Straight Bourbon. The tasting experience justifies this price point.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
