NULU's Toasted Rye is a whiskey I had been eagerly anticipating. Anytime I hear the word "toasted," my ears immediately perk up. Also, since NULU is somewhat new to the state of Georgia, once it hit the shelves near me, I knew it was a rye I wanted to review.
Remember that this is a review of the neck pour, so my notes and rating may change in time.

Detailed Tasting Notes
Nose Review - Rating: 81
There was a very mild rye spice aroma on the initial nosing of NULU Toasted Rye Whiskey 6 Year. I put the glass down, let it sit for about 30 seconds, and nosed it again. There were very mild rye spice, mint, and peppercorn notes, but not much else. As I let the glass sit, the rye spice became more prominent. At first, it was a little underwhelming, but it just so happened to get distracted and let my glass sit full of this whiskey for many minutes. The nose was much more vibrant when I returned to it, and the caramel overpowered the rye.
Palate Review - Rating: 79
The palate is what you would expect from an MGP rye. There's not much viscosity on the mouthfeel but it has strong rye spice notes. The smokey flavor and caramelized sweetness seem to build the more you sip. You can taste the char. However, it is not the smoothest whiskey initially. Still, this is MGP rye, so it's always going to be good. The caramel and vanilla forward notes of NULU Toasted Rye Whiskey complement the rye spice well.
Finish Review - Rating: 79
Like NULU's toasted bourbon equivalent, the heat lingers in the back of your throat and to a lesser degree in your esophagus.
Uniqueness Review - Rating: 79
It's hard to say that this is very unique since the juice is MGP rye. However, the toasted expression adds a nice change of pace.
Value Review - Rating: 75
The value is tough to determine with NULU Toasted Rye Whiskey Single Barrel Select. The retail price seems to be about $89.99; less in California and more in Georgia where I live. There are many MPG ryes in this price bracket, but this seems to be a little higher than other 6, 7, or 8-year MGPs.

Smell IS taste. I am just a guy who has been hit with the bourbon bug and who has come to the conclusion that life is too short to drink average tasting bourbons. Go Gators!
